In this video, I find myself in some abandoned woods near Mineral Point, Wisconsin that was being used as an old auto dumping ground of some sort. I also stop by an out-of-business body shop near Carmi, Illinois that offered some excellent old vehicles and a rusted out school bus.

Ilford HP5 Plus with Pentax 645 Medium Format Camera and some neighborhood Classic Car Photography3/16/2024
A cloudy day is the best day to take a ride with a roll of Ilford HP5 Plus black and white film. For this video, I use my Pentax 645 medium format camera with the Pentax SMC 45-85mm zoom for 15 images including some classic cars found in a local neighborhood, to a view of the city center in downtown Indianapolis.
All images scanned on my Epson v600 scanner, producing tif files straight from the scanner, no Negative Lab Pro used for these images. Developed in Cinestill DF96 Mono bath - https://amzn.to/3TgyikM Ilford Delta 100 is everything they say it is! Let's try it out with the Pentax K1000 Film Camera3/9/2024
I would have expected this film to be more costly than it actually is, especially compared to other 'professional' films like Kodak Portra 160, 400 and 800 in either 35mm and 120 formats.
But to the contrary, as of this article, I can buy it locally for about $8.50 US, while Kodak Portra 160 is over $12. Even Ilford's own sister-black and white 'consumer grade' film FP4 is only .50 cents per roll less than the Delta 100. What the manufacturer says: “Delta 100, medium speed, exceptionally fine grain, black & white film. Ideal for uncompromising image makers who want to capture maximum detail and sharpness."
I continue to use the compact but extremely potent Ricoh GR III for some photos of an abandoned house not too far away from my home. This was a fun little excursion that included this little house, as well as the barn featured in Vlog #1.
All photos shot in manual mode, and edited in Lightroom. I've also started numbering the images as they appear in the video, so if you have any comments about a specific photo, you can refer to it by number when commenting, that should help the conversation a little better. Question of the Week: Do you enter abandoned buildings/structures when you find one, or only shoot from the outside? Follow up Question: Does the possibility that an abandoned structure could be haunted prevent you from photographing them?
Using the Ricoh GR III, or any compact camera, you can take great landscape photos. It helps that the Ricoh GR III has an APS-C sized sensor, giving a much better image than most compact cameras with 1-inch or 1 2/3-inch sensors, and often better results than most consumer-brand DSLR's and mirrorless cameras on the market.
In this video, along with using the Ricoh GR III to take sunset photos of an abandoned barn near my home last fall, including camera techniques, tips and settings for any camera, I give an update on my YouTube channel's progress and direction, and offer viewers the ability to participate in the Question of the Week! |
